The Lady Lions continue to roll through District 8-2A competition, racking up a perfect 4-0 record after a win over Hawley on Tuesday.

Albany defeated the visiting Lady Bearcats, 48-20. Details of the game were not available at press time but will be reported next week.

Albany will finish the first round of district on Friday against the 4-0 Haskell Maidens in Haskell, with the winner claiming the top spot in the first half. Game times are 4:00 p.m. for the JV and 6:30 p.m. for the varsity.

The second half of district will start in Cross Plains on Tuesday, Jan. 22. The JV girls will start at 4:00 p.m., followed by the varsity girls at 6:30 p.m.

Albany traveled to Stamford on Jan. 8, bringing home a 46-45 win.

“We started out a little shaky, but luckily our defense kept us in the game,” girls head coach Tate Thompson said. “Some of the girls really stepped up when the game got physical, and I’m very proud of them for that. To go over to Stamford and steal a win from them on their own floor was really big for us.”

Alli Hill was named offensive standout, while Elia Hebel was picked for defense.

“Stamford is a very talented and athletic team, so we had to be more disciplined against them,” Thompson said. “We did the little things right, and I’m extremely proud of how we responded.”

Scoring for Albany were Torie Fuentes 8, Jillian Guinn 8, Cydney Nelson 5, Hill 12, Jaleigh Morales 4, and Hebel 9.

Stamford 4 15 7 19 - 45

The Lady Lions picked up their third district win on Friday, beating Roscoe 47-31.

“We came out and played well from the beginning,” Thompson said. “This was probably the most consistent game we’ve played this season as far as playing well all four quarters. The girls played hard and showed tons of character when it came to dealing with adversity.”

Morales was named offensive standout and Hebel was tapped for defense.

“The girls are hungry right now and it shows in their effort,” the coach said. “We have a big challenge ahead against Haskell, but I think the girls are ready.”

Scoring for Albany were Fuentes 9, Guinn 5, Nelson 2, Hill 7, Morales 21, and Hebel 3.

The JV girls earned a 43-12 win in Stamford on Jan. 8.

“The girls had another strong win against a district opponent,” coach Richard Sullivan said. “They have been picking up steam and rolling through district.”

Scoring were Isbell 4, Smith 10, Tana Thompson 2, Chavez 8, Amber Leverton 2, Balliew 6, and Garcia 11.

The JV also defeated Roscoe last Friday, 44-23.
