Hundreds attend Living History on Friday

Fort Griffin Living History Days took place last weekend and the annual event drew a sizable number of area students on Friday in spite of the soggy ground.

“We were determined to have our annual Living History Days rain or shine this weekend,” said event specialist Eric Abercrombie. “We ended up with over 500 students and teachers on Friday, and just a few sprinkles.”

Although the historic fort was open to the public on Saturday, Living History was cancelled.

“Unfortunately, we had to call it early Saturday morning,” said site manager Mitch Baird. “Eric spent the day pulling people out of the mud. It was unfortunate (that we had to cancel on Saturday), but at least we had the school day, which is what is most important to us.”

Living History Days will take place again next year, on the second weekend in October, and the local fort will once more come alive with reenactors to help history leap off the faded pages of old books and land large as life – moving, breathing, talking, shooting, and imprinting their stories forever in the memories of school children and anyone else who wants to attend the annual event.
