The number of positive COVID-19 test results increased last week, following a national trend that has developed over the last few weeks.

County judge Bob Skelton reported Monday that 16 tests were administered locally for the period of June 20-24, with seven positive results

Testing the prior week resulting in one positive result out of seven tests administered.

Skelton also reported there were 13 lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 that required hospitalization in the Abilene area, with no patients requiring ICU. There were no pediatric hospitalizations as of Monday.

The latest cases are thought to be the Omicron variant, which is reportedly more contagious than previous strains, but has milder symptoms.

Testing continues to be available locally at the Shackelford County Health Clinic and ResourceCare Community Health Center.

The total number of tests or positives does not include any information about tests administered outside Albany or by use of home tests.

Residents continue to have access to at-home tests free of charge. Anyone interested can go online: www.COVIDtests.gov.

In addition, some insurance coverage will pay for a certain number of tests per month purchased over the counter. Individuals may have to file for reimbursement from insurance or the pharmacy may file the insurance for the customer. Cost may also depend on the brand of the test and whether the consumer is on Medicare.

The CDC continues to recommend all eligible citizens get vaccinated with the series of two vaccines and the follow-up booster.

Anyone experiencing COVID-19 symptoms can make an appointment to be tested at one of the two testing sites in Albany.

The Shackelford County Health Clinic (325-762-3661) and ResourceCare (325-762-2447) both offer testing and vaccines by appointment.
