Shifters Car Club third annual Truck Show took place in downtown Albany last Saturday, with 23 entries in the contest and assorted host vehicles also on display.

Robert Eakins of Stephenville won Best of Show, Bobby Kerrell from Graham claimed Best Truck, and winners were announced in several additional categories.

“The show went pretty well, but it was extremely hot on Saturday,” said Robert Snyder, one of the organizers of the event. “I think the heat and the start of the school year slowed down our entry numbers. We tried to make a short day of it so everyone could get back on the road and out of the heat.”

Snyder said that exhibitors who braved the 100-plus degree weather to come to the event seemed to enjoy the truck show.

“We had some people who had not been here before, and they seemed to be very enthusiastic about the show,” Snyder said. “Another guy, who has been to nearly all of our car shows, said that he thought we have the best location of any of the local shows, and I heard several participants said they wanted to see our truck show continue and grow.”

But even with the positive comments, the low number of out-of-town exhibitors has local car club members thinking of dropping the event.

“We are talking about maybe including more truck classes in our spring car show instead of hosting a separate truck show,” Snyder said. “It’s hard to fit in a show this time of year with the weather, other car and truck show in the area, and the start of school. It’s hard to predict if you’ll have a good turnout until the morning of the show.”

Snyder thanked Jacob Cleveland for letting the truck show use his PA system for announcements and playing tunes.

“The people who helped put on the show including the registration gals, car parkers, and everyone else did a good job,” said Snyder. “We gave away some trophies we had made by hand for some of the special awards, and the winners seemed to be very excited about that.”

Touch of Color Paint from Abilene selected the winners and donated the trophies for the Best Truck and the Best Rat Rod. Robbie Kitchens, representing the national group Goodguys Rod and Custom Association, brought trophies and selected two Goodguys Rep Pick winners.

The crowd voted for their favorite for the Peoples Choice.

Other winners were selected by club members.
