Weekly lunches get underway

The Feed Store served the first junior/senior Tuesday lunch of the new school year this Tuesday, Aug. 21, and the non-denominational youth ministry executive director Tisha Wilkins is hoping to add a few more names to the list of volunteers.

“Most of the churches that have been involved are repeating, and some have signed up for more turns,” Wilkins said. “But we still have some open spots, and I can work out scheduling options with individuals or groups that are willing to volunteer for the Tuesday lunches.”

The cooks will typically provide and prepare food for up to 78 juniors and seniors, according to Wilkins.

“The Feed Store provides the paper goods,” the director said. “We can help with some of the cost of the food if needed, and our youth ministers are on hand to help the volunteers during serving and clean up, if needed.”

She added that commitments don’t have to be for an entire month.

“If you or your group want to help, I can put you down for one week, or however long you want to do it,” said Wilkins.

There are currently 74 junior and senior students enrolled at Albany High School, and most of those are expected to choose to attend the weekly lunches.

Wilkins encouraged all of the juniors and seniors to come to the free meals.

“If anyone needs transportation here, there are lots of people coming,” Wilkins said. “Just ask your fellow classmates, and someone will give you a ride.”
