Veterans to be honored this week

All veterans in Shackelford County are invited to attend a special Veterans Day luncheon sponsored by the Albany Study Club today (Thursday) and are also requested to join local students at two separate Veterans Day ceremonies to be held at Albany High School tomorrow and at Moran ISD on Monday, Nov. 12.

The three Veterans Day events will honor local veterans and thank them for their service to America.

Study Club Luncheon

All attending veterans will be honored at the Albany Study Club’s sixth annual Veterans Luncheon today, Nov. 8, at 12:00 noon at Friendship Baptist Church.

“We are hoping that everyone notes the change in location for the event this year,” said committee chair Tammy Glover.

The club sent out invitations to all veterans who are already on their mailing lists, and they also welcome any other former servicemen  and their spouses.

“We want to thank all the local veterans and their spouses for their service in the United States Armed Forces,” said Glover.

The meal will be vegetable stew, cornbread, and peach cobbler.

To be added to the list of local veterans or for more information about the event, contact Glover or any other Study Club member.

AISD Program

The Albany secondary school will host a special Veterans Day Assembly on Friday, Nov. 9, in the high school gym starting at 10:00 a.m.

Local Boy Scouts will present the Stars and Stripes and the Albany High band will play “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Student Council president Ryan Hill will give the welcome.

The veterans will be introduced by principal Edward Morales.

Student Council parliamentarian Cutter Cowart will lead the pledge to the American flag, and Council reporter Jaleigh Morales will lead the pledge to the Texas state flag.

Council vice president Madison Wilkins will recite a patriotic poem.

Third grade students from Nancy Smith Elementary and choir director Robbin Guinn will perform “Thank A Vet.”

Council secretary Taylor Scott and treasurer Carley Green are the usherettes.

Immediately following the program, FCCLA and student council members will host the veterans and their families in the foyer for refreshments.

Veterans are asked to RSVP to the high school office so the organizers will have enough chairs in the special seating area at the event, and can plan appropriately for the reception after the ceremony.

If any veterans did not receive an invitation, they are encouraged to contact the school office to be included in this year’s event and/or be added to the mailing list for future programs.

The AHS office number is 325-762-3974.

MISD Veterans Lunch

Staff and students at Moran ISD have invited all local veterans to a special meal on Monday, Nov. 12, at 12:00 noon.

“We are again having a hamburger luncheon to honor our veterans,” said superintendent Danny Freeman. “We would love for all local veterans and their families to be there.”

Pictures of several local veterans will be on display, according to the superintendent.

“The photos were donated to the Moran Museum by the local American Legion,” said Freeman. “Moran, as well as Shackelford County as a whole, has a very rich tradition of military service to our great country.”

Veterans can RSVP by calling the school office 325-945-3101 with the total number of family members that will attend the fourth annual Veterans Day hamburger cookout.
