Albany High School students were the second place journalism team and the second place science team at the Stamford UIL Invitational meet on Saturday, Feb. 22, and Luke Ivy won the chemistry section of the science contest.

“I was very pleased with how the students did,” said local UIL coordinator Rick Davis. “We took 16 students and came home with 17 awards!”

Davis said that over half of the local students who competed at Stamford last weekend had been unable to attend the previous practice meet in Haskell due to conflicts, primarily with the local stock show.

The district meet will be held in Stamford on Monday, March 23.

“The biggest competitors from our district were at the Feb. 22 meet,” said Davis, “so I am expecting most of our kids who placed on Saturday to do as well or better at our district meet.”

Individual Winners

Senior Addison Asher won first in News Writing, second in Feature Writing, fifth in Copy Editing, and sixth in Editorial Writing.

Hannah Trail claimed first in Editorial Writing and fourth in Ready Writing. The junior also took second in Science and fifth in Mathematics.

Luke Ivy won the Top Chemistry award. The sophomore was third overall in Science and fourth in Mathematics.

Junior Tana Thompson was second in Editorial Writing.

Sophomore Sarah Cotter placed third in News Writing.

Senior Taylor Scott was third in Headline Writing.

Sophomore Ty Everitt was fourth in News Writing.

Freshman Ashley Richards claimed fourth in Headline Writing.

Senior Jaleigh Morales tied for fifth in Spelling.
