Star party slated at park April 27
Fort Griffin State Historic Site will hold a Stars and Skies party this Saturday, April 27, at 8:30 p.m.
The forecast calls for a low around 61 degrees, mostly clear skies, and a slight south wind. The sun should set at 8:15 p.m. and the moon won’t rise until way after midnight, leaving the late evening perfect for a star party.
Stars & Skies of Texas
“Fort Griffin State Historic Site has gained a reputation for having some of the darkest night skies in all of Texas,” said event specialist Eric Abercrombie. “Due to the remote location of the site, there is minimal light pollution to hinder nighttime viewing of the stars.”
Amateur astronomers are typically on hand to share their knowledge of the night skies, and also allow guests to use their telescopes and other astronomy equipment.
“Visitors will have the opportunity to see planets, nebulas, distant galaxies, our own galaxy, and much more,” said Abercrombie.
Stars and Skies will be held in the baseball field of the campground.
The price for the event is regular admission to the park. Site staff will collect regular admission near the entrance to the campground for those arriving after hours.
Guests are asked to dim their headlights if they arrive after dark in order not to interfere with other participants’ night vision.
Fort Griffin is open daily from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Admission fees are $4 for adults, free for those five and under, and $3 for college students, those between six and 18 years of age, and anyone over 65. Special rates are available for families and adult tour groups.
