Seniors “adopted” by community
By Lynsi Musselman
Albany High School’s Class of 2020 is missing out on many exciting events due to the coronavirus shutdown, and local parents and volunteers are stepping up to try to fill in some of the gaps.
Last week, Tisha Wilkins organized a program called Adopt a Senior. The program matches someone from the community with one of the 41 graduating seniors.
“I saw this program done in another community, but this has an Albany spin on it,” Wilkins said.
She said the first round of seniors to get adopted was successful.
“I am doing a second round in hopes every senior gets adopted twice,” she said.
Wilkins explained that each senior provides a bio of their likes and dislikes, and the adoptee provides the senior with weekly gifts.
“There is no price limit on the gifts; they do not need to be expensive,” Wilkins said. “You can even give your senior something small each week until graduation.”
Wilkins said there is no immediate deadline for the second round. This is open until graduation. Participants are welcome to adopt more than one senior at a time.
“We want to lift the spirits of these kids and give them some encouragement,” Wilkins said. “Let them know they are not alone in this.”
