Self-defense classes continue

About 30 local residents of all ages attended a no-cost self-defense clinic Feb. 8 with a chance to continue training as part of a newly formed local organization.

Self-defense and jujitsu classes are now available through a new local branch of the American Jujitsu Institute, a national non-profit, according to Blake Picquet, who is organizing the group.

The first class will be held this Saturday, Feb 22 with times initially set at 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturdays and 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday evenings, subject to change based on what works best for the majority of participants.

Those who attended Feb. 8 were taught how to protect their personal space and deal with common attacks.

“Both of the instructors are experts in the field as they are trainers in practical martial arts and self-defense and also teach programs for the military, law enforcement, and first responders,” said Picquet. “We hope the information and confidence you gained from the clinic will benefit you throughout your life.”

He added that students who sign up for upcoming classes will add to their self-defense skills and build confidence as they progress through ranks and belts in a practical martial arts class.

“Local donations are sought so that some scholarships can be made available to those in need,” he concluded.
