Registration to continue at local schools

School bells will ring out the start of a new school year a week from today, and any students who are not yet registered should complete the process as soon as possible so teachers and administrators know how many students to expect.

Local classes start on Thursday, Aug. 15, at 7:55 a.m. at the elementary school and five minutes later at 8:00 a.m. at the secondary campus.

NSES Registration

Twenty-eight new students have enrolled at Nancy Smith Elementary School since May, according to PEIMS coordinator Lillian Wheeler.

“We lost a few of our students from last year,” Wheeler said, “but with the new enrollees, I think overall our numbers will be up a little bit from 2018-2019.”

There are still openings in both Head Start and pre-kindergarten classes, according to administrative assistant Stephanie Gleitz.

Anyone requesting enrollment in pre-K or Head Start and all students new to the district who will be entering kindergarten through sixth grade need to register at the elementary office, which is open from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Online Status

The registration system for returning students at NSES is available online at reg.albanyisd.net, and parents who have not already completed the online forms need to do so ASAP.

“If you haven’t gotten registered, and you are the parent of a current NSES student, please go online and take care of that,” said Wheeler.

Computers are available at the school for those who don’t have access to one at home.

For more information, contact the NSES office at 325-762-3384.

Meet the Teacher

Meet the Teacher will take place next Tuesday, Aug. 13.

Pre-K through second grade teachers will be in their classrooms at NSES from 5:00 to 5:30 p.m., while third through sixth grade instructors will meet with parents from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m.

Orientation for new Albany Junior/Senior High School students and parents (including incoming seventh graders) will at 6:00 p.m. in the snack bar.

For more information see the related article in the Back-to-School section of this edition of The Albany News.

JH/HS Registration

Students enrolled at AJ/SH were able to pick up their class schedules starting on Aug. 1, and principal Edward Morales said this Tuesday that about 50 percent of them had done so.

“We’ve had a few new students enroll,” said the principal. “Around nine of them are totally new to the district and have moved here from out of town.”

Morales said that current enrollment numbers at the secondary campus are around 155 at the high school, and another 82 in junior high.

“The office will be open from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. five days a week for anyone who still needs to register,” Morales said.

For more information, call the high school office at 325-762-3974.

New Student Meeting

All seventh grade students and parents, as well as any new-to-the-district secondary students and their parents, need to attend an orientation meeting on Tuesday, Aug. 13, at 6:00 p.m. in the cafeteria/snack bar of the junior high building.

Computers

The school district provides MacBook Air laptops to all students in grades 10 to 12, and Chromebooks to those in fifth through ninth grades, according to AISD technology director Dan Key.

Students at the secondary campus are required to complete and sign all of their paperwork, including computer use forms, student handbook acknowledgment form, and student code of conduct, as well as pay the computer usage fee before they can pick up their laptop or Chromebook.

The computers will be available in Room 300, Kevin Hill’s room, according to Key.

Fifth and sixth graders at NSES will be issued Chromebooks, and their parents are required to sign an acceptable user agreement. The elementary students are not charged a fee, since they are not allowed to take the tablets home, but they are held accountable for any damages, according to district superintendent Jonathan Scott.

Staff Preparation

New AISD staff members had orientation on Monday, Aug. 5.

They were joined by the rest of the faculty on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday for meetings and staff development days.

The district’s annual back-to-school staff breakfast took place yesterday morning.

Teachers have comp days tomorrow and Monday, followed by work days Aug. 13 and 14.

School starts on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 7:55 a.m. at the elementary school (the same as last year), and at 8:00 a.m. at AJ/SH (five minutes later than last year.)
