Albany News

Albany alumni, students, and fans should make plans to join in the many Homecoming preparations and activities that will take place over the next few weeks.

Current Albany students will elect the homecoming court next week.

The theme for the parade this year was not yet known at press time.

Classes can spend up to $200 on their parade float, and can start working on floats on Oct. 7.

Oct. 7 will be the traditional street painting day, according to secondary principal Edward Morales.

The biennial Homecoming Parade will progress down the streets of Albany at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 12.

Homecoming royalty will be crowned during halftime of the 7:00 p.m. Albany vs. Baird football game at Robert Nail Memorial Stadium on Friday, Oct. 12.

Exes Activities

Betsy Senter and the Albany Ex-Students Association have some activities planned for alumni on both Friday and Saturday of Homecoming week.

“The majority of the alumni tell me they are really more interested in visiting with their classmates rather than having so many planned activities, so we are giving them plenty of time for visiting this year,” said Senter.

On Friday, Oct. 12 the ex-students are encouraged to attend the pep rally, enter the parade if possible, or if not, cheer on the participants from the downtown sidewalks, and eat supper at the First Baptist Church’s Chili and Bean Fundraiser at 6:00 p.m. before attending the 7:00 p.m. game against the Baird Bears.

Coming Home Royalty selected from the classes of 1967 and 1968 will be presented during the halftime activities.

Saturday’s organized proceedings begin when the Junior Garcia Memorial Golf Tournament, hosted by the Class of 1988, tees off at 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the municipal golf course. For more information contact James Sanders at 325-201-4770.

“The funds are used to support local charities and provide graduating seniors with scholarships,” Sanders said. “We have given approximately $30,000 in scholarships to AHS seniors.”

A showing of the Edwin Dyess Story will take place at the Aztec Theater at 10:00 a.m., according to Senter.

“The film shows why so many people are working hard to have the Congressional Medal of Honor presented to Albany native Lt. Col. Dyess posthumously,” said Senter.

A short alumni meeting will take place at the Aztec before a casual lunch is served in the theater’s meeting room and patio.

“The class of 1968 has a Saturday lunch planned at Prairie Star’s Cookshack,” Senter added. “The class of 1967 will gather at my house at 2:00 p.m. for visiting all afternoon.”

Alumni Registration

A mailing that went out this week includes a reservation slip for the membership dues in the Albany Ex-Students Association of $10 for two years, as well as for the meeting/lunch, which is $15.

“We really need everyone to pay their dues so these celebrations can continue,” Senter said.

Alumni who have not received a membership flyer can send their contact information and dues to Albany Ex-Students Association, PO Box 2633, Albany TX 76430.
