By Melinda L. Lucas

Members of the National Honor Society have met to elect officers to lead their organization over the next nine months.

Addison Asher will serve as president, with Blaine Kayga elected as vice president, Gracie LeMay as secretary, Julia Bowman as treasurer, and Conner Clark as reporter.

All of the students are seniors and were inducted into the National Honor Society last fall. AHS faculty members will recommend a new group of students, including both juniors and seniors, to become NHS members in a ceremony to be held later this semester.

Albany High School’s honor society is sponsored by Jenny Scott and Michaela Bradford.

Honor society members are required to have six hours of community service per semester, encouraging them to “make a difference for others” in the community.

During their meeting last week, members discussed several opportunities for service, including assisting with Vittles by Vehicle deliveries and volunteering at Closet Angels and the football concession stand. They can also help senior citizens with lawn care, as well as tutor elementary students who need help with reading and math.

National Honor Society is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals to recognize students who excel in scholarship, leadership, service and character. The local NHS chapter was chartered in 1962.
