First Baptist Church Albany cancelled its mission trip this year but did not cancel the mission.

FBC mission committee member Dinty Bowman said the group will instead be donating the funds collected for their annual trip to the congregation of First Baptist Church in Aspermont, whose building was destroyed by fire in a lightning storm on June 20.

“FBC Aspermont lost everything in their church building, including a safe with original church records,” Bowman said. “If this had happened to us, many people would help us out, so we want to give to them.”

Bowman said that the annual FBC mission trips started in 1995, and the group has gone to various destinations including Bracketville and New Orleans, as well as overseas destinations.

“God at work has always been visible during the past trips,” Bowman said.

Youth involved in FBC’s Camp Jam, which was was held last weekend, collected several items for local residents, including a piano, a trampoline, cash, and many other items to add to the donations for this year’s mission.

FBC youth director Campbell Terry said during a game called “bigger and better,” the kids were so inspired by what the mission team was doing by sending money to a church that lost everything, they wanted to do their part by helping get donations for the church.

“All in all, the items received were roughly worth $6,000,” Terry said.

Bowman added that the  mission team will have an auction at a later date to sell some of the items for cash to send to the Aspermont church.
