MISD students kick off Kids Heart Challenge

By Kathy Thomson

American Heart Association representative Beth Lotter came to Moran to give a presentation to preschool through fifth grade classes on Feb. 12.

“Lotter was here for the kick-off of ‘Kids Heart Challenge’,” said elementary teacher Sabrina Swedlund.

“The students can download an app and have friends and relatives donate money to the American Heart Association,” said Swedlund. “The more money they raise, the bigger the prizes they can earn. They also learned about some of the children they would be helping and how to keep their own hearts healthy.”

The American Heart Association developed Kids Heart Challenge to encourage school children to keep moving with jump rope competitions, basketball, dance, and “warrior” obstacle courses. In addition to taking the healthy pledge, students learn how their hearts work and how to raise money to keep other hearts working.

According to the Heart Association, the program includes cardio-pumping activities that go beyond the simple joy of exercise and has kids pledge to be more physically active, drink more water and do a good deed.

Kids learn about the importance of physical activity and how it can help prevent numerous health problems, including heart disease and stroke.

Students also learn the importance of teamwork and helping other people, all while building their self-esteem in an exciting and active way.

Cheer Meeting

A large group of Moran students, along with their parents, attended a cheer and mascot informative meeting last Thursday, Feb. 13.

The event, originally scheduled for Feb. 6, was postponed due to wintery conditions last week.

“We had a mandatory meeting with parents and cheerleader/mascot hopefuls last Thursday,” said cheer sponsor Alyson Orsak. “There are 17 junior high and high school students, both boys and girls, wanting to try out for cheer or mascot. We will have several practices before our March 20 tryout date.”
