First through fifth grade classes at Moran were able to attend Hardin-Simmons University’s 37th annual Western Heritage Day last Thursday, April 25.

Western Heritage Day is designed to immerse children of the Big Country in western culture as it might have been in Abilene during the 1800s.

Activities and demonstrations included HSU’s Six White Horses and World Famous Cowboy Band, face painting, a farm animal petting area, sheep shearing, folk music and dancing, story telling, branding, chuck wagon snacks, demonstrations on quilting, weaving, trick roping, boot making, and hat making, and seeing animals from the Ft. Griffin longhorn herd.

The event is aimed at teaching new generations about the integrity, honor, character, and hard work frontier women and men left as a legacy for generations of West Texans.

State Testing

Some of the mandated state testing took place during April, but more STAAR and EOC tests are scheduled to occur over the next two weeks, including both reading and mathematics tests for grades three, four, six, and seven.

Grades five and eight will take science tests, and eighth graders will also take a social studies exam.

The state requires End of Course exams for students taking algebra, biology, U.S. history, and English.

Remaining Schedule

The final scheduled break from classes at MISD this school year will be on Friday May 24 and Monday May 27 for the Memorial Day weekend.

Classes will release early on the last two days of school, May 30 and 31.

High school graduation for Moran seniors will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, May 31.
