MDO class learns about Albany

Members of the four and five year old class taught by Brandi Lehew at Matthews Memorial Presbyterian Church Mother’s Day Out program have been learning about the local community.

Lehew said she has been here in Albany about three years and thought this spring would be a good time for her students and herself to learn about the town.

“We started in January, but we were still working around COVID,” said Lehew. “In February, we walked to the post office and mailed Valentine cards to the children’s parents.”

The class was visited by Dr. Justin Cormack who talked to the students about being a physician.

Field trips were also  taken to the local Brookshire’s grocery store and to the Old Jail Art Center.

“We have had so much support from the community and have learned so much about the inner- workings of our town,” Lehew said.

The class visited the Donut Shop and learned how donuts were made.

The Fire Department hosted the students for half a day, letting them explore the equipment and talk to the firefighters.

Last Friday, the class visited the annual health fair sponsored by ResourceCare and then traveled out to Fort Griffin.

“Many of the kids had never been out there, and it was a perfect day for a field trip,” she said. “We went through the visitor’s center, had a picnic, and then played on the campgrounds before we returned back to school.”

Lehew said her students have really enjoyed the outings, and she plans to do this with her future students.

“I only have two returning students next year out of my six this year,” she said. “This is something I definitely want to teach again.”
