Marching band rehearsals continue

Members of the Albany High School band met on Monday evening for the first rehearsal of the 2018 AHS marching band, according to band director John Stockdale.

The band will continue rehearsing each week night, and they will try to adjust the time as needed to schedule around conflicts, Stockdale said.

“We need to be ready for the first football game, so we have to work as much as we can before then,” said Stockdale.

The band plays the traditional football season songs, Alma Mater, fight song, and the Star Spangled Banner at the football games and performs on the field during halftime.

Luke McMillian wrote the halftime shows the last two years, and put together a presentation based on The Firebird Suite entitled “Rise of the Phoenix” for the band this year.

McMillian has moved to the Houston area.

Thomas Fogelman, a retired band director from Throckmorton, will conduct the practices with the band, according to Stockdale.

The football regular season opens at home in Robert Nail Memorial Stadium on Friday, Aug. 31 with the Lions taking on Colorado City at 7:30 p.m.

The band will travel to Dublin for the Lions’ first away regular season game of 2018 the following Friday, Sept. 7, with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

A group picture of the band will be taken during the first week of school. The photograph will be published in the 2018 football program, which is for sale at all home football games.

Band members will be assigned uniforms during the next week.

Parents of band students will man the concession stand at the local football stadium for the last half of the season as one of their major fundraisers of the year. The funds raised are used to help support biennial band trips.

Penelope Prater will serve as president of the Band Boosters this year.
