Matthew Key was the overall winner in the Albany Cub Scouts’ annual Pinewood Derby race that was held at the Scout Hut on Tuesday, Jan. 28, taking home the top trophy.

Cubmaster Jacey Shack and Den Leaders Dan Key, Crystal Herrell, and Robert Rogers organized the event.

“All the kids did a fantastic job building their cars,” said the Cubmaster. “We presented ribbons to the first through third place winners, and trophies to the grand and reserve.”

Eight registered Scouts in the Lion, Tiger, and Wolf Dens were matched against each other, while the three Scouts in the Bear and Webelos Dens raced together.

The overall winners were determined amongst all of the members of the local Cub Scout Troop.

“Two of the Den Leaders and I also made cars this year,” said Shack. “After the main race was over, and the winners declared, each Scout was able to challenge an adult to race just for fun. I think Crystal’s car remained undefeated, but both Dan and I lost to at least one of the kids.”

Shack said that he is hoping to get parents as well as Boy Scouts more involved with the Cub Scouts over the next year.

“I think that the more people are involved, the better the program will be,” said the Cubmaster. “Hopefully we can get some of them building cars to race after the Derby, or joining together as a group to build a car.”
