After a winter and spring of cancelled events for high school students, the Texas High School Rodeo Association finals will take place in Abilene June 7 to 13 at the Taylor County Coliseum.

Three Albany High School students qualified to represent Region III in a modified version of past years’ events.

Junior Addie Beth Denton and seniors Mady Connally and Gracie LeMay will compete Monday, June 9 in two go-rounds of competition.

Parent Dena Denton said at the end of the week after all regional contestants have competed, the top 15 will return for a short go of rodeo competition.

The top four cowboys and cowgirls in each event in Abilene will represent Texas at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Lincoln, NE July 19 - 25.

To advance to the finals, each girl had to place in the top 10 at the regional level. Each of the 10 regions in Texas have 10 qualifying rodeos that take place throughout the school year.

Denton was the Champion Breakaway Roper and placed 10th in goat tying. Connally placed eighth in pole bending and LeMay placed third in goat tying.

“I feel blessed to be able to compete at the Texas High School Rodeo Association state finals this year after so many events have been cancelled,” LeMay said. “I have worked hard to qualify for state one last time as a senior, and I am so thankful for all that THSRA is doing this year to allow the contestants  to compete safely.”

According to the Texas High School Rodeo Association website, only contestants and their parents or guardians will be allowed access to the Taylor County Expo grounds and will be required to sign a Health and Safety Commitment and Liability release form in order for entry access.
