Local cheer teams compete well

Albany Sports Center sent two cheer teams and one individual performer to compete at the American Spirit Championship 2019 West Texas Express Nationals at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on Sunday, Jan. 13, and brought back the championship banner in the youth level two division for the second year in a row.

The youth team, the ASC Lions, is made up of second through sixth grade girls. Seventeen local children, one student from Wylie, and three from Breckenridge are on the team this year.

The Albany Show team, ASC Cubs, performed an exhibition. Ten local girls, from three years old through first grade, make up the team.

“I like working with the young ones,” said coach Kandi Barron from Albany Sports Center. “And we really love the competition in Lubbock. It is a little laid back and a lot of fun!”

This was the first show of the year for the local girls so Barron had spent part of their practice sessions going over what to do if something went wrong during the competition.

“I really wasn’t expecting anything, but due to technical problems, the music quit halfway through our performance,” said Barron. “The girls just continued their routine and didn’t miss a beat! I was so proud of them!”

Hailey Gleitz also competed in individual competition and won first place in best tumble pass.
