Albany native and 2015 AHS graduate Molly Lee has always been a bit of a character.

While possibly appearing shy to casual acquaintances, she is known among her circle of friends as funny, clever, maybe even somewhat dramatic – especially in videos she periodically posts on social media.

However, over the last two weeks, she has become an internet sensation after a video of her attempting to administer a facial waxing on herself went viral.

The 22-year-old now lives in Dallas where she is employed as a Women’s Ministry Associate for the Texas Divisional office of the Salvation Army.

Lee posted her five-minute video on April 13, racking up over four million views on Facebook and 200,000 on Instagram and was even picked up by ABC’s Good Morning America.

“I was bored and thought this would be something funny to do that would give all my friends something to laugh about,” said Lee who is sheltering in place. “It was painful. What you see on the video was no joke. I recommend leaving that to the beauty professionals in the future.”

Lee said that she was interviewed by GMA a couple of days after the clip went viral, with the story being posted to the GMA website along with the video itself.

“My phone has been blowing up with people calling me,” she said. “I’ve done interviews for the Dallas media and others like a station in Missouri. It’s been crazy.”

Lee said she has posted funny videos since she was in junior high. The first to gain much popularity was while she was attending college at Texas Tech and involved a beauty facial masque.

She says she isn’t letting her newfound fame go to her head.

“I don’t feel any pressure to try to cater to an audience,” she said. “I’m just treating it as I would any of the videos, as a source of having fun and a way of relieving a little boredom.”

Lee earned a degree in Community, Family, Addiction Sciences at Tech in 2018, accepting the job with the Salvation Army in November after she graduated.

She recently finished her master’s degree in Addiction Recovery Counseling from Liberty University in Virginia.

Lee is the daughter of Jim and Martha Lee of Albany.
