Two teams scored 56 strokes each at the Albany Kiwanis Charity Golf Tournament last Friday and the deadlock for top place was settled by the common tie-breaking practice of a scorecard playoff.

Thirteen teams competed in the 12th annual John Rose and Jim Law Memorial Tournament, which was held at the Albany Golf Club on Friday, Sept. 27.

The API team of Ronnie Anderson, Charles Barrett, Tommy Terrell, and Bob Tidwell was awarded first place at the charity golf tournament with a score of 56.

Placing second after the tie-breaker was the C.E. Jacobs Co. team of Randy Awalt, Sam Balliew, Terry Moberley, and Landy Warren, also at 56.

Third place, only one stroke behind the two winners with 57, was the team of James Waters, Kenneth Waters, Ted Ivy, and Rodney Barton.

“The weather was a little warm, but we had a great tournament,” said coordinator Steve Waller. “We had a very good turnout, including quite a few Chamber members, for the fajita lunch.”

The Albany Chamber of Commerce cancelled their weekly Friday meeting so members could eat at the golf course and support the Kiwanis fundraiser instead.

According to Waller, “It may not be the best fajita meal you’ve ever had, but it’d be in the top five!”

Winners in the golf tournament were noted in several individual categories including longest drive, closest to the pin, closest to the line, and closest to the marker.

Hole #9 was the site of the “Longest Drive” competition, and it was won by Charles Barrett.

“Closest to the Pin” competitions were held at three holes. The winner at Hole #5 was Jakob Clawson. Rodney Barton was closest at Hole #6, and the nearest ball at Hole #8 was teed off by Jason Gardner.

The winner of the Hole #4 “Closest to the Line” competition was John Tom Heatly.

There were four holes with a “Closest to the Fairway Marker” contest. Justin Noble won the challenge on Hole #1, John Rister took the honors on Hole #2, and Kyle Bryan earned the award on Hole #7. No one got their ball inside the box at Hole #3, so that hole did not have a winner.

The golf tourney and fajita meal is one of the fundraisers sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club.

The Albany Kiwanians Scholarship Fund sponsors students at all levels in academic and athletic activities, as the Kiwanis work to develop future generations of leaders.

“We really appreciate everyone who donated,” said Waller. “It helps us support local youth.”
