Guinn, Dyer crowned at Prom

Jillian Guinn and Joshua Dyer were crowned queen and king during the Albany High School Junior-Senior Prom held March 23 at the Whitney Theatre.

The king and queen are selected by the members of the junior and senior classes.

This year the winners were chosen by a direct vote instead of from a slate of nominees as has been done in the past.

Guinn, the daughter of Robbin Guinn of Albany and Texas game warden Shea Guinn, plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree in event planning (communications/marketing) from Texas Tech College of Human Sciences after high school graduation.

Guinn is the president of the Albany chapter of the National Honor Society and has been on the “A” honor roll since ninth grade. She also serves as co-treasurer of the local chapter of the FCCLA. Guinn was the student council treasurer her freshman year.

Guinn is a staff writer as well as the assistant editor of the Lions Roar student newspaper. She has gone to state in UIL news writing and helped her journalism team win district. She won a first place in News Writing at the 2018 Interscholastic League Press Conference and helped the Albany staff win Silver Star Awards for two years.

Guinn is a two-time winner of her age division at the Western Heritage Fiddlers contest in Abilene.

Guinn has competed as a Lady Lion on basketball, track, and softball teams, where she was named to the All District Basketball team, qualified for state in the mile relay, and played in the state softball tournament.

She was captain of the Lady Lion basketball team.

The prom queen has worked as a baby sitter, house cleaner, and fireworks stand operator.

She is a member of the Fandangle cast, has helped raise money for Toys for Tots, designed the Graham Memorial Pavilion, and updates the Shackelford Courthouse marquee.

Dyer is the son of Trey and Sally Jones Dyer of Baird, and he has attended school in Albany since the fifth grade.

He plays on the Lions varsity basketball and baseball teams and has also played summer baseball with the Dallas Tigers and played travel ball with several different teams since he was 10 years old.

Dyer was named to the All-Big Country baseball team as an outfielder his freshman year.

Last year Dyer was chosen as the District 8-2A baseball offensive MVP, and was named to second baseman on the THSBCA All-State class 2-A first team, and class 2-A All-State honorable mention second baseman by the TSWA.

The switch hitter has signed to play baseball for the Navarro College Bulldogs after graduating from Albany High.

“He will major in general studies so he can focus on baseball,” said his mother, Sally Dyer. “He is hoping to get picked up by a D-1 school in a year or two, and then continue to play baseball after college.”

Dyer has also received accolades on the basketball court. He was named to the Big Country All-District 8-2A basketball first team this year.

However, he was surprised by the fact that his peers selected him as prom king.

“It was a very happy shock to him to be chosen,” said Sally Dyer.
