Funding coming in for stock show

By Kathy Thomson

The Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Show is just two weeks away, with weigh-in for hogs, lambs, and goats on Thursday, Jan. 23, and classes judged on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 24-25.

According to organizers, donations are still needed in order to offset show expenses and provide prizes and premiums to the exhibitors.

“We are currently at $17,675,” said SCYLA treasurer Molly Cauble on Tuesday, Jan. 7. “All donations go toward the expenses of the stock show, such as ribbons, belt buckles, supplies, and premium money.”

With an anticipated increase in the number of youth entered in the show this year, the expenses are expected to be a little greater than in previous years.

“It takes approximately $20,000 to fund the show,” Cauble said.

Another $2,325 is needed to reach this year’s targeted amount.

“Any excess funds contributed will be distributed to all participants through our Bidders Pool,” said Cauble.

The pool provides a baseline premium to all the animals in the sale.

Tax deductible donations can be mailed to Shackelford County Youth and Livestock Association, Attn: Molly Cauble, P.O. Box 2439, Albany TX 76430.

Sales of tickets from two raffles will also be used to raise funds for the annual livestock show, as will sales from the concessions stand.

Shot Gun Raffle

A Savage Stevens 12 gauge Model 320 pump action shotgun is being raffled.

Raffle tickets are priced at $5 per ticket, or five tickets for $20.

Processed Hog Raffle

Michael Rabb and Cody Foster with Rust Processing Deer Plant have donated a processed hog.

Tickets for the hog raffle are $1 each, or $5 for six.

Barn Clean-Up Day

The stock show barn clean up day is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

“The more people we have, the faster it will go,” said Albany FFA instructor Chris Beard. “Bring your rakes and brooms. If we have a good turnout, it shouldn’t take more than a couple of hours.”

Shackelford County 4-H members, Albany and Moran FFA students, and parents of all of the exhibitors are expected to help.

“We will be clipping animals during the next week or so,” said Beard. “The show is coming up quick. We’ll probably be doing some clipping after the clean-up on Saturday.”

Student Eligibility

Students must pass their classes in order to be eligible to exhibit their animals, according to Beard.

“I know many of you have a considerable amount of money tied up with show animals,” said Albany High School principal Edward Morales. “Please make sure that your student is performing well academically to prevent him/her from becoming ineligible.”

Those with questions can contact Morales or Beard at Albany High.

Show Changes

Although the basic structure of the show will be the same as in previous years, there will be a few noticeable changes at the 2020 Shackelford County stock show.

Showing of rabbits and chickens will take place on Saturday, Jan. 25 this year, instead of on Thursday evening.

Showmanship classes will immediately follow each species of animal.

A couple of new classes have been added due to exhibitor interest.

Hair sheep will have their own class.

There will also be a division for white crossbred pigs as well as one for dark crossbred pigs.

Graduating seniors will be recognized prior to the auction.
