In response to recent inquiries by readers who were wondering if Albany currently has a food pantry, The Albany News contacted ResourceCare program assistant Ragan Riley for information about the assistance they offer.

According to Riley, the food bank at ResourceCare is open Monday through Friday, and receives part of its food from the food bank in Abilene.

The Food Bank of Abilene, Inc., also called the Food Bank of West Central Texas (FBWCT), is a non-profit 501(C)3 community service organization that collects donated food to distribute to other non-profit agencies serving the needy of the Big Country.

Shackelford County is one of 13 counties served by the FBWCT.

According to their web site, the FBWCT’s clients include “working-poor families with needy children, seniors subsisting on fixed incomes, and possibly even you or your neighbors in times of disaster.”

Shackelford residents who are in need of food should reach out to the workers at ResourceCare, while those who have food to donate are asked to do the same.

“We accept all donations,” said Riley. “Donors can make arrangements with one of our case managers to drop off food. Those in need have to come to ResourceCare and meet with one of our case managers.”

ResourceCare is located at 725 Pate Street in Albany. The phone number is 325-762-2447.

The Abilene Food Bank has been serving the Big Country area since it began in early 1983 under the leadership of Mary Frances Warren, Texas Dept. of Public Welfare, Pete Ybarra with the Community Action Program, and Betty Bradley.
