First lunch served to students

About 55 to 60 Albany High School juniors and seniors attended the first weekly luncheon Tuesday, Aug. 22 at The Feed Store.

Feed Store executive director Tisha Wilkins said the total exceeded expectations.

“I had 45 plates set out, and I had to go get my extra stash,” she said.

The number surpassed the attendance for last year’s initial gathering.

“It was a great turnout,” Wilkins said. “Next week, we’re going to have a contest between juniors and seniors to see which class has the higher attendance. The winning class will receive an extra prize.”

The local youth ministry will provide the weekly meals during August and September with local churches taking a month during the remainder of the school year.

The high school lunch period is from 12:35 to 1:10 p.m.

“We try to get them in and out quickly so they have plenty of time to get back,” Wilkins said.

Last week, Wilkins met with four senior representatives to The Feed Store Student Council.

“We have completed almost all our selections for our Student Council, but we haven’t released those names yet,” Wilkins said. “We’re still waiting on a couple of names to verify.”

The 24-member Student Council is composed of four students – two boys and two girls – from the six secondary grades.

Wilkins said some surprises are planned for the spring semester, but nothing has been finalized yet.

At this time, no plans have been made for Bible study groups, Wilkins said, but discussions are being held.
