Feed Store starts fall events

The Feed Store has planned a pair of ongoing programs for local youth to begin with the start of the new school year.

Feed Store executive director Tisha Wilkins said the Tuesday lunch program for high school juniors and seniors will commence on Aug. 24, and a few weeks later, Fifth Quarter gatherings will follow each home football game.

Albany’s home opener is scheduled Sept. 17. Other home dates are Sept. 24 and Oct. 1, 15, and 29.

“We are not doing Monday and Tuesday night programs for now,” Wilkins said. “We’re just hosting the Tuesday lunches and the Fifth Quarter.”

According to Wilkins, there will be special events planned for junior high and high school throughout the fall.

“Students just need to watch our social media, Instagram or Facebook, to get those details as they come about,” she said.

The Tuesday lunch program will continue throughout the school year, Wilkins said.

“We have many churches in the community that have signed up to host those lunches,” Wilkins said. “Church members come in and provide the meals for the students.”

Wilkins said she expects about 75 high school students to take part in the lunches, up from last year’s number.

“It all depends on the class sizes, who graduates, and who moves up,” she said. “I think we’re a little bit higher than normal, which is not a bad thing. It’ll be good to have our numbers up.”

Wilkins said there will be a significant change to the Fifth Quarter, a partnership with the Ministerial Alliance, with junior high students meeting at the Feed Store while high schoolers gather at the high school gym parking lot.

“We offer a place to hang out,” Wilkins said. “We have games and snacks. We are going to meet the high school students at the gym parking lot, and take them a snack.”

Fifth Quarter meetings will start immediately following games and end at 11:00 p.m.

Wilkins said the Feed Store will accept donations and is accepting volunteers to assist with the Tuesday lunches and Fifth Quarter.

“We can always take donations at the Feed Store,” she said. “Local churches help host, so people can check with their home church and find out what dates they’re signed up for. If they do not have a home church and still want to volunteer or donate, they are welcome to call me.”
