Boys and girls from kindergarten through fifth grade who are interested in joining Cub Scouts should attend a meeting at the Nancy Smith Ele-mentary School cafeteria at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20.

Formerly restricted to boys, Boy Scouts of America began allowing girls to join Cub Scouts in June.

In February 2019, the Boy Scouts program will be called Scouts BSA, and will welcome girls to join. However, boys and girls will be in separate troops.

“Boys and girls in Cub Scouts will be in the same pack, but in different dens,” said Jaime Limas, district executive of the western part of the Texas Trails Council. “This meeting is primarily for Cub Scouts, but boys who want to join Boy Scouts are also welcome to come and sign up if they would like.”

He explained that Cub Scouts is for boys and girls from five to 10 years of age, and Boy Scouts is for boys from sixth grade through high school.

“They will need a parent or guardian along with them to fill out paperwork and sign the forms,” Limas said. “Cub Scouts will need $12 for registration, and they will be given a free Cub Scout Handbook, which is an $18 value.”

Children can join local Scout packs at any time of the year, but the district makes a special drive to encourage participation in Cub Scouts in the fall.

To find out more information, or to sign up, parents can contact Teri Lucas at 325-762-5100 or Limas at 325-668-8576 or jaime.limas@scouting.org.

Cub Scouting involves the whole family as parents pitch in to plan and deliver activities. Parents who are interested in being local den leaders or volunteering in other ways are encouraged to contact Lucas.

Individual dens typically meet once a week, and the entire pack meets together once a month.
