Four Shackelford County 4-H members are competing in the District 7 Food Show on Thursday, Nov. 21 in the Big Country Hall located at the Taylor County Expo Center in Abilene.

Competing in the event this year are Albany elementary students Charli Trail and Emma Belle Smith, as well as Johnnie and Ellis Hise from Moran.

Fourth grader Charli Trail will prepare Easy Chicken Paella for the Junior Main Dish division.

Smith, a third grade student, has entered the Junior Fruit/Vegetable division with Momsie’s Apple Crisp.

Johnnie Hise is baking scones for the Senior division.

Ellis Hise will compete in the Junior division. He is making cheese as his entry in the contest.

“The 4-H members prepare their dish ahead of time and present it to the judges at the competition,” said volunteer 4-H leader Kristie Smith. “They are judged on their knowledge of how the dish is prepared, the main nutrients in their dish, and food safety techniques they implemented while preparing their dish. They are also judged on their knowledge of MyPlate and how their dish fits into MyPlate.”

Senior exhibitors (those currently in high school) are also expected to give a five-minute presentation about their entry, including why they chose the dish and how it relates to this year’s theme of “Food Around the World.”

Winning senior contestants qualify for the State Food Show to be held during the Texas 4-H Roundup in College Station on Thursday, June 11.
