Candidate signs up for Albany council

Ragan Riley filed for a seat on the Albany City Council this week, and incumbents Sam Snyder and Alice Branham filed to return to their seats on the Moran school board.

The deadline for others to place their name on the upcoming ballot is only days away. Candidates who wish to run for one of the local offices available on the May 4 local election must file before the close of business on Friday, Feb. 15.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 5, the Place 7 seat on the Albany school board was the only contested race, with four candidates already vying for the seat currently held by retiring Betsy Parsons.

In contrast, no one had yet filed for any of the three hospital board openings, the Albany mayor’s office, one of the two seats up for election  on the Albany City Council, or either of the two available seats on the Moran City Council.

There is no filing fee to run for the local offices.

Albany City Council

The office of mayor and two of the at-large city council seats are up for election in 2019. City council board members, including the mayor, serve for two-year terms.

Rodney Alexander is the current mayor. Carolyn Waller and Joe Tidwell hold the two board seats that will be voted on this cycle.

Riley is currently the sole candidate for a seat on the council.

Applications for city council and for the office of mayor are available at the Albany City Hall from city secretary Becky Wiloth. Those with questions can call Wiloth at 325-762-3133.

Albany ISD

Dinty Bowman, Clint Chapman, Stephen Kayga, and Jerry (Mike) Bean are all running for Place 7 on the Albany school board.

Joe Tidwell has filed for Place 6, the seat currently held by retiring member Pam Davis.

Incumbent Kelly Head has filed for re-election to Place 5.

Candidates for the Albany school board must live within the boundaries of the school district and must file for a specific seat.

Applications are available at the superintendent’s office at the secondary school campus.

Trustees serve for three-year terms and three seats will be determined this election.

Hospital Board

The Shackelford County Hospital Board two-year, at-large seats currently held by Jo Ann Estridge, Mike Bean, and Leslie Belcher will be on the ballot this year.

Candidates for the hospital board must have their applications signed by 10 registered Shackelford County voters.

According to Regina Whitt at the district office, Jayme Vaughn and incumbent Jo Ann Estridge have picked up paperwork but no one has turned in a packet.

Election information and applications are available from Whitt at the district office at 840 Gregg Street.

Moran City Council

According to Jackie Wallace at City Hall, no one has filed for the two at-large seats on the Moran City Council, but Steve Taggart has filed for re-election to the office of mayor.

The member seats up for vote are currently held by Stanley Reeves and Lisa McFerrin.

The mayor and council members serve for two-year terms.

Applications are available from Wallace at Moran City Hall.

Moran ISD

Trustees on the Moran school board serve three-year terms.

Incumbents Snyder and Branham have filed for re-election to the two at-large seats that are expiring this year, according to superintendent Danny Freeman.

People must live within the district’s boundaries to be eligible to serve on the Moran ISD school board.

Packets for the positions are available in the superintendent’s office during school hours.
