Boomerang fundraiser underway

Area churches are participating in the Open Door Pregnancy and Family Resource Center current fundraiser.
Baby Bottle Boomerang is an annual fundraiser during which baby bottles are distributed to area residents to be filled with coins, bills, or checks which will be donated to the Open Door.
Breckenridge Open Door center director Marlina Cowan said there are about 24 churches in the area participating in this year’s fundraiser.
“We have bottles out in churches in Albany, Breckenridge, and Cisco,” said Cowan. “We’ve been impacted by COVID this year, so participation is a little down.”
Cowan said the fundraiser kicked off in mid-January with churches offering bottles around the Sanctity of Life Sunday.
“Some churches recognized this particular Sunday on Jan. 17 and some on Jan. 24,” said Cowan.
Donors are encouraged to fill the bottle, turn in their money and then continue to refill the bottle until the completion of the fundraiser at the end of February.
Cowan said that while the Baby Bottle Boomerang centers around helping mothers and babies, the center offers many more services.
The Open Door, which is located in Breckenridge and Cisco, is a faith-based, life-affirming pregnancy and family center that provides resources, mentoring, and education for life skills.
“While this does raise money for the center, we want this drive to make people aware that life begins at conception,” said Cowan. “We want to bring awareness to people so they know that everyone plays a part in this mission.”
The center offers services to young women and families offering free pregnancy tests, ultrasounds, parenting classes, and more.
Cowan said even if people miss the deadline at the end of the month, they can still drop off their baby bottle any time at either Open Door location.
“We’ve had people bring in bottles from last year’s drive,” Cowan said. “It’s never too late to return a bottle to us.”
