Book Fair continues through Friday

The Parent Teacher Organization’s Scholastic “Dino-Mite book fair; Stomp, Chomp and Read!” is set to wind down to a close tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 15, at the Nancy Smith Elementary School cafeteria, but purchases can still be made between now and then.

“Things are running smoothly,” said PTO president Ginny Ivy on Tuesday afternoon. “It was kind of slow on Monday, but it picked up on Tuesday, and we expect that to continue.”

Some parents forget about the book fair until they see the signs on Monday, and sales normally pick up after the first day, according to Ivy.

Lunchroom Schedule

Parents of elementary students are encouraged to visit their children during lunch and eat with them in the cafeteria according to a schedule on the NSES website.

The suggested lunch schedule for the rest of the book fair week is as follows:

Thursday, Feb. 15 – First and sixth grades

Friday, Feb. 16 – Second grade

Family members who missed their suggested times earlier this week can come on the book fair’s regular hours, 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m., either today or tomorrow.

“If you intend to eat in the lunchroom, please call the office as soon as you can to let them know,” said Ivy.

Visitors planning to bring their own food do not need to call in advance, but they do need to check in at the office before going to the cafeteria, according to regular NSES policy.

Other Options

The book fair will also be open this evening, Feb. 14, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for anyone who would prefer an evening option, and online shopping at www.scholastic.com/fair will remain open 24 hours a day through Friday, Feb. 15.

The book fair offers specially priced books and educational products, including new releases, award winning titles, children’s classics, and current best sellers.

In addition to books, there are DVDs, games, posters, bookmarks, and more.

Local teachers have made lists of books that would enrich their classroom libraries.

Any parent or community member may purchase books at the book fair or make contributions for classrooms and the library, as well as purchase books for their own children and grandchildren, even pre-school age.

For more information about donating books, call the NSES office at 762-3384 or visit the book fair when it is open.

Coin Drive Ends

“This year each grade can win the ‘All for Books’ coin competition,” said Ivy. “We will give a prize to each student if their grade collects $50. Grades that raise $100 will be treated to an ice cream party, and those that collect $200 will get a pizza and ice cream party.”

The contributions are used to purchase books for the school library, fill the teacher’s wish lists, and make sure that every child has a book they can take home, according to Ivy.

“All the jars are looking full,” she said. “I think that we will do as well as last year, which is good. It gives us the opportunity to make sure that every child gets a book.”

The “All for Books” coin competition at NSES will end today, Feb. 14, so the money can be counted, and books can be purchased with the funds on Friday, during the on-site book fair, according to Ivy.

“Reading for pleasure inside and outside of school has real and long-lasting benefits,” said Ivy. “Please come to our book fair and help shape your child’s reading habits. See you at the book fair!”
