BBQ Cook-Off expected to draw more entries

The fourth annual Ft. Griffin BBQ Cook-Off is set to take place in downtown Albany the last weekend in September, and among the 20 or more teams that have paid the $150 registration fee to enter the event are some well-seasoned local veterans that took home prize money last year.

More entries are expected to enter the “Battle for the Blade and World Championship Dove Competition” as the event, which is sanctioned by the International Barbeque Cookers Association, approaches.

The “Cook’s Kickoff Party” and judging of the steak and the dove divisions all take place on Friday Sept. 28, while the rest of the competition occurs the following day.

Steaks are one of the “bonus” categories, and like the other three bonus events – Bloody Mary, Dove, and Beans – they have an additional $20 entry fee.

Online signup for the competition is available at fortgriffinbbq.com and closes on Sept. 27 at 12:00 midnight.

“We appreciate all the support from the locals that have already entered their teams and the ones that plan on doing so soon,” said organizer Justin Winters. “We are sitting at 20 teams and are hoping to see a lot of support from the local teams again this year. We are also looking at bringing in a dozen or two more competition barbecue teams from across the state.”

The top prize money and a custom made trophy knife forged by Michael Whitmore of Serendipity Studio will be awarded to the top team. Money will also be awarded to other winners including the top ten in each of three meat divisions, chicken, ribs, and brisket.

The Cook’s Meeting is at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28. Steaks will be judged at 8:00 p.m., and dove at 9:00 p.m. on the first evening.

Winners in all other categories will be selected on Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning with the Bloody Mary turn-in at 10:00 a.m., beans at 11:00 a.m., chicken at 12:00 noon, pork spareribs at 1:30 p.m., and brisket at 3:00 p.m.

The dove turn-in time was recently moved to Friday evening for this year’s cook-off in order to avoid conflicts with IBCA rules, according to Winters.

“We plan to adjust some other turn-in times before next year, so we can move dove back to a Saturday event for the 2019 contest,” he said.
