For the second time in two weeks, the Albany ISD board of trustees hired a band director for the 2020-2021 school year.

They also accepted two resignations during the special meeting on Monday night, one of which was from former secondary principal Edward Morales, who has accepted an administrator position at Santa Anna.

William Vaughan, who has taught in Kaufman for the past two years, verbally accepted the offer of a one-year probationary contract and was expected to be in Albany to sign a contract on Wednesday morning.

Vaughan, who is married and has two small children, was a band director in Mansfield for eight years before he moved to Kaufman, where he was a middle school director.

“He has the knowledge and experience we’re looking for, and he was in the top tier of candidates,” said AISD superintendent Jonathan Scott. “He has good qualifications, and I think he will be a good fit for Albany.”

Vaughn’s contract was offered on a motion by Kelly Head, with all trus-tees voting in favor.

The second resignation accepted by the board was for Russell Pettitt, who was approved at the June 15 regular meeting.

Scott explained that he was not aware until last week that Pettitt had actually signed his contract and left it with office personnel on June 16, the day after the last board meeting.

“He sent an email to me on Wednesday (June 17) to decline the offer, but since we have a signed contract, we need a vote to accept his resignation,” said Scott.

Scott checked with the district’s legal counsel to make sure that Pettitt’s email could be considered as a letter of resignation.

Joe Tidwell made the motion to accept both resignations.
