The Albany News Junior Journalists: Mysterious object discovered in Albany

Last week, junior journalists were given a creative challenge: write a story based on the discovery of a mysterious object in an unexpected place. The goal was to craft a compelling narrative about what the object might be, where it came from, and how people reacted to its discovery.

Last week, Payton Crump, a curious middle schooler from Albany, was walking along the creek behind her house. The water had been high from recent rain, and as Payton followed the winding path, something unusual caught her eye. Half-submerged in the creek bed, partially covered in moss and water, was a small, metallic disc. Payton knelt down and pulled it from the water, feeling a strange hum course through her fingers. It was cold and smooth, with intricate, glowing symbols etched into its surface. The disc was about the size of a dinner plate and made of an unknown, silver-like material that shimmered oddly under the sun. Its symbols seemed to shift and change when Payton looked closely. People in town were baffled by the object. Some believed it was a piece of ancient technology, others thought it might be a relic from an old, forgotten civilization, while a few even joked that it was from another world. No one could explain its strange properties or how it had ended up in the creek. Theories about why it was created ranged from it being a tool of some long-lost culture to something meant to communicate with future generations. Some even wondered if it was a signal—an invitation or a warning—waiting for the right person to find it. But Payton is certain of one thing: the disc has a purpose, and she intends to uncover it.
