AISD classes to resume Tuesday

The two-week Christmas break will end and students and staff of Albany High School, Albany Junior High School, and Nancy Smith Elementary School will be back in class on Tuesday, Jan. 8 to start the second semester and the fourth sixth weeks of the 2018-2019 school year.

Teachers return for a staff development day on Monday, Jan. 7.

The elementary staff will meet the new interim principal, Cindy Madison, at 8:30 a.m. before going to the secondary campus for a welcome visit with Jonathan Scott, who is beginning his role as Albany ISD superintendent.

Madison is a retired elementary teacher and principal who will serve part time at the local elementary school during the spring semester.

The entire staff will also participate in testing training by Leigh Lowe during the morning on Monday. After lunch, teachers will work in their classrooms to prepare for the week.

School will begin at the usual times on both campuses, with the tardy bell ringing at 7:55 a.m..

The next scheduled break in the schedule will be on Friday, Feb. 1, the second day of the three-day county stock show. The holiday was originally set for Jan. 25, but was adjusted when the stock show was moved to Jan. 31-Feb. 2.

Another day off for students, with a teacher comp day planned, is Feb. 18 on Presidents Day.

Spring break will be March 11-15, with early release planned on Friday, March 3.

Students will also get April 19 and April 22 off, to bracket Easter weekend, with the staff eligible for comp days. Another student holiday/comp day is set for May 10.

Because April 22, May 10, and May 23 are designated inclement weather days, those holidays may be needed for make-up days if winter weather causes school cancellations.
