AHS students join bass association

Albany High students Max Balliew and Riley Green, accompanied by adult boat captain Jerry Green, spent Saturday, Oct. 6 at Lake Granbury where the two anglers fished in the season opening tournament of the West Division of the Texas High School Bass Association.

The Albany team hooked three keepers for a total of 4.89 pounds, to snag 53rd place out of the 226 teams entered.

One of three teams from Glen Rose High School ended the day with five bass in their live well, totalling 17.93 pounds, to reel in the first place scholarship award.

Because bass fishing is not an official UIL sport, students are allowed to compete for scholarship money at tournaments.

“Max and Riley fished hard and did a great job,” said Jerry Green. “They got a lot of points towards the Angler of the Year Race, which is the goal. If they can stay consistent, they will be in the championship.”

Max’s mother heard about the THSBA from a friend in Eastland.

“Max and Riley have both grown up fishing and are very good anglers, so I asked Chris Beard if that was something we could do here,” Candy Balliew said. “Chris checked, and the next thing I knew Max brought a packet home from school, and Riley and his dad, Jerry, got us registered.”

Beard added that students do not have to be in ag to join a fishing team.

“This is not FFA related,” Beard said. “I just helped them obtain the registration information.”

The THSBA does require student anglers to maintain passing grades in all of their classes, and to observe all federal and state fishing regulations, as well as tournament rules.
