The Albany News Junior Journalists - Mayor for a Day: What Would You Do?

Last week in The Albany News Kids Corner, we asked the future leaders of Albany what they would do if they were mayor, and their responses did not disappoint. Some ideas were ambitious, aiming to transform the town in bold new ways. Others were practical, focused on improvements that would benefit the community. And then there were the downright entertaining ones—suggestions that might raise a few eyebrows but definitely bring a smile. Hopefully, Mayor Montgomery is taking good notes, because if these kids have their way, city hall could be looking at some big, unexpected changes in the future!

I would give the Albany school money so they could build a gaga pit and a new playground. -Crew Spencer

I would get rid of the STAAR test for both of the schools. -Howdy Hefner

I would let everyone go to the City Pool for free. -Kopelyn Loveall

I would build an indoor pool, so we could swim when it is not summer. - Tanner Swert

I would build a gaga pit at the elementary school and add more recess and P.E. time. -Abigail Key

I would start a new event called the “Chill Day.” This would be a day where you get to stay at home and have a cozy day.  Another thing I would do is build a homeless shelter. -Payton Crump

I would start a Go Fund Me to raise money for a gaga pit. I would start this because a lot of people like playing this game and it’s very fun. This is a very simple project that needs to be solved, so with the help of a fundraiser it will be super easy to find a solution for this problem. -Isabella Tadeo

I would make some improvements to the playground and add a gaga pit. I would also build a Walmart and Six Flags. -Kiana Richardson

I would give the school money for supplies, a gaga pit, and new playground equipment. I will also make it where people can shoot hogs whenever they see one. I would also start an annual First Day of Summer Party where everyone who wants to can get together at the City Pool. -Mae Musselman

I would give the 5th graders more recess time. I would do this because 5th graders need more time to rest their brains. -Leia Rose

I would shorten the school day, build a Chick-Fil-A and make the school serve it for lunch. I would also build a gaga pit at the school and start a drawing competition. -Gatlyn Alexander

I would start an event for all of the pets in Albany. The owners could show them off and then there would be a huge parade were the animals you can’t walk on a leash would be displayed on a float. Another thing I would do is ask people to donate money to the school, so that they can build a gaga pit and new playground equipment. -Berkley Davis

I would build a Chick-Fil-A and a Starbucks, so when we get back from sports we can enjoy a treat. -London Dye

I would make sure there would be cameras everywhere, because people can do bad things without people even knowing. -Aleia Eaves

I would create more events so people could have fun. I would do this because we need more events in our town. -Hadley Sutton

I would make Albany more kid friendly. To do this I would make more sidewalks for bikes and more entertainment places for kids to meet.  This would allow kids to hang out more, and have more fun. -Reese Nitschke

I would make a McDonalds, so people can eat more chicken nuggets. -Arturo Flores

I would say that if the weather is below freezing, students don’t have to go to school and they don’t have to make those days up. -Lyla Early

I would build a dog shelter and anyone could volunteer to help wash dogs, clean cages, and love on the dogs. -Olivia Smith
