The Albany tennis program claimed the boys team  at the District 10-2A tournament and qualified nine entries for regional competition.

Albany ended Monday’s play with the top mixed doubles team, the top girls doubles, first place boy singles and second place boys doubles. Added on day two was a runner up mixed doubles title.

The Albany High School boys golf team turned in two of their best rounds of the season at last week’s regional tournament but fell just short of advancing to state, finishing sixth in a highly competitive field.

The team posted rounds of 327 and 323 over the two-day tournament—scores that in most years would have been enough to move on. But this year’s Region II competition was stacked with strong teams, including two that shot below 310 both days and 14 that finished under 320.

Ten students advance to regional UIL meet

Ten Albany High students are advancing to the Region II Academic Meet on Friday and Saturday at Grayson College in Denison.

Students qualified in seven contests by placing in the top three places individually or as part of first place teams at the district UIL meet last month.

Albany UIL coordinator Rick Davis is optimistic about several of the participants moving forward from the regional level.

Albany’s boys and girls track teams competed in the Region I-2A track meet last weekend in Springtown, facing one of the most competitive fields in recent memory. Though no athletes advanced to the state meet this year, coaches said the experience will be a motivator going forward.

Lions close regular season, prep for playoffs

After taking a long weekend off for the Easter holiday, the Albany Lions returned to the field for the last game of the regular baseball season on Tuesday against Hawley. Results were not available at press time and will be reported next week.

The Lions defeated Abilene TLCA by a big margin of 23-2 last Monday, April 14, one day earlier than originally planned because of a conflict. No games were scheduled on Good Friday.

Moran High School athlete Ellis Hise is finishing up a busy spring season with appearances at the district tennis tournament, regional track meet, and regional golf tournament.

He and Ezekiel Henson will travel to Angelo State University this Friday for the UIL regional academic meet. Henson will compete in the social studies event, while Hise advanced in ready writing.

Regional Track

Hise was Moran’s lone representative at the regional track meet held April 18-19 at Abilene Christian. He advanced out of district with a fourth place spot in the discus.

Chamber Crawfish Boil tonight at 6

The Albany Chamber of Commerce is throwing its annual Membership Crawfish Boil and Fish Fry tonight, and all members are invited to join the celebration.

The event begins at 6:00 p.m. outside the Depot building, where Chamber members and guests can enjoy a full meal of boiled crawfish and shrimp, crispy fried fish, and a spread of sides. The Happy Grill food truck will be frying up fresh onion rings on site.

18th Classic Car Show returns to downtown Albany

The 18th annual Albany Classic Car Show is revved up and ready to go in downtown Albany on Saturday, April 19, with the public urged to come see dozens of vintage cars and trucks from around the Big Country over the Easter weekend.

Organizer Robert Snyder said activities will actually begin the night before, on Friday, April 18 with a hamburger supper and burnout at the Bank Park.
