Acommemorative book of articles aboutShackelfordCounty families and businesses – old and new – is being put together as part of the 150th celebration of the county’s founding. AccordingtoShackelford150 Club chair David Waller, the book will be modeled after the 1976 “Now & Then” magazine that was published for the centennial celebration.

Grant funds enhanced security

Albany ISD has spent about $720,000 over the summer to enhance security at both local campuses, as mandated by recent statewide regulations issued by the Texas Education Agency and the state legislature. The district has qualified for up to $3.8 in state grant money to complete updates to provide better safety and security for both students and employees.

Local nominees receive awards from state ag teachers

The Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas presented awards to The Albany News and Albany resident Wesley Turner for the support of agriculture education at its conference, held Sunday-Friday, July 21-26 in Dallas. Albany agriculture teacher and FFA sponsor Chris Beard, who submitted nominations for both honors, accepted the awards on behalf of the recipients.

Rose wins 2nd in state archery results

Shackelford County resident Leia Rose placed second in the junior age group of the Texas 4-H State Indoor Archery Match conducted earlier this year, with Rose just recently learning of the results. In the indoor archery match, contestants competed in March and April at one of six locations around the state – Amarillo, Bay City, Carthage, Graham, Mercedes, and Monahans.

Spots open for Aug. 3 tourney

The Albany Masonic Lodge enjoyed a banner year last year with its scholarship fundraising golf event, and organizers look to at least match that success this year. The Albany Masonic LodgeScholarshipTournament is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Lions to start practices Monday

The Albany Lions football program spent this week preparing for the start of preseason practice. Coaches distributed equipment to approximately 50 players, starting Monday, July 29 with seniors and other returning lettermen.
