The Shackelford County Rural Volunteer Fire Department had a busy week last week, responding to six calls. Chief Brad Henry said five of the outbreaks occurred along a stretch of State Highway 6 between Albany and Moran.
The Albany varsity cheerleaders participated in an on-site summer camp this week, with all 10 who participated being nominated for NCA All-American. The camp was led by NCA instructor Ja’Mya Cole from the DFW area, whomadethenominations basedonskillssheobserved duringthethree-daycamp.
Two new stones being added to the veterans monuments on the Shackelford CountyCourthouseSquare are now complete and will be installed next Tuesday, July 2. Mary Kay O’Connor, who headed up the campaign to raise funding for the structures, is inviting the public to come watch the monuments being set into place.
Albany sent 16 youth to the Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes Leadership Camp, held Monday-Friday, June 1721 at Hardin-Simmons University. Local FCA representative Paul Johnston said the camp drew about 350 attendees, 62 of them from Johnston’s area.
While a wetter spring has eased drought conditions, Shackelford County Commissioners adopted restrictions on fireworks in the county over the Fourth of July holiday at their Monday, June 24 meeting. Commissionersadopted a resolution that prohibits the sale, detonation, ignition or any use of fireworks classified as “skyrockets with sticks” and “missiles with fins” in any portion of the unincorporated area of Shackelford County.
A bomb threat to the local Brookshire’s Grocery Store was answered by at least six city and county law enforcement officers on Saturday, June 22 at about 10:30 a.m. According to Shackelford County deputy Jason Price, Brookshire’s Asset Protection department detected the threat to several Brookshire’s locations, including Albany’s store, and contacted the local dispatchers.
‘Victory or Death’ letter to be discussed Any county residents interested in knowing more or commenting for or against a request from the Alamo Letter Society to place a plaque in the Shackelford County Courthouse or on the grounds are encouraged to attend the next commissioners courtmeeting on July 8. The meetings start at 9:00 a.m., with the public forum portion at the beginning.
Albany Little League’s 2024 season came to an end last week with both Majors and Minors All-Stars eliminated from the Texas West District 5 All-Star Tournament. Albany Little League hosted five games over three nights in the tournament, played Monday-Sunday, June 17-23.
The Albany Athletic Booster Club is already gearing up for a new school year with a meeting to be held sometime in early July to discuss advertising sales for football programs. Booster Club president Cari Heatly said the time, date, and location for the meeting are to be determined.
Albany Golf Club saw the completion of its latest facilities upgrade this week with the installation of paved cart paths throughout Albany Golf Course. Golf club president Ronnie Anderson said work was scheduled to conclude earlier this week on Tuesday, June 25.
