Forms available for cheer camp

Albany High School cheerleaders will hold a Cubs Cheer Camp from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. begining Monday, July 26 through Wednesday, July 28 at the AHS gym.

The camp is open to future cheerleaders age three to incoming sixth graders.

Cost is $35 per camper, and each additional sibling will cost $20.

Registration forms must be returned by Monday, July 12 for campers to receive a t-shirt.

Sport-specific training underway

Summer conditioning and limited sport-specific training for students entering grades 7-12 are being held Monday through Thursday mornings at the high school.

The conditioning and football specific training for boys started last week and will continue through July 22, while the girls’ summer program began on June 7 and will continue through the month of June. The girls will take the first week of July off, but they will return for two more weeks of training in July.

2 AHS baseball players named to all-state teams

Two Albany baseball players have been recognized with places on the 2A All-State Baseball Teams for 2021.

Senior Jackson Chapman was named to the 2021 Elite All-Star Team as a third baseman. He was picked for the 2A All-State Team as a second team third baseman as well.

Senior Cade Neve also received a second team spot on the 2A All-State squad as a pitcher.

The Albany Lions finished the 2021 season with a 22-5-1 overall record that included a 10-0 finish in District 8-2A for the district championship.

Market draws 30 vendors

Vendors of all kinds are welcome at the Moran Open Air Market being held June 25 to June 27.

Hosted by N House Cafe on the property directly behind the Red Barn, the market will be open Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

So far there have been 30 vendors sign up, including boutique clothing, food, antiques, garage sale items, farmers market, and many more.

Moran ag students attend camp

Four  Moran ISD agricultural students headed to the West Texas A&M Meat Judging camp Sunday, June 20.

This is the first time that Moran FFA students have participated in this type of event.

“This camp is our first step in growing the FFA program here at Moran ISD,” said new superintendent John Denson. 

7on7 team heads to state tournament

 The Albany 7on7 football team is scheduled to play at the state tournament beginning Thursday (today) in College Station.

The Albany team will play in Pool H, which also includes Gunter, Mildred, and Eldorado. The Lions will play each of the other teams in the pool to determine which groups advance into bracket play on Friday.

Albany’s pool games are set for 1:00 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4:00 p.m. on Thursday, according to coach Anthony Ceder.

Carlton Lee  Edgar

Carlton Lee Edgar, 81, of Moran, Texas, passed from this life on Tuesday, June 15, 2021 in Abilene.

Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, June 27, 2021 at The Hamil Family Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Larry Briley officiating.  Services are under the direction of The Hamil Family Funeral Home, 6449 Buffalo Gap Road, Abilene, TX 79606.

Carlton was born on March 6, 1940 in Gorman, Texas to Carl (Skinny) and Ethel (Smith) Edgar. 

WILLIAM HOWARD STRICKLAND

William Howard Strickland, age 94 of Moran, passed away Saturday, June 19, 2021. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, June 24 at Moran Cemetery with Jeff Pleasant officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of Morehart Mortuary.

William Howard Strickland was born June 6, 1927 in Ibex, Texas to Tommie Lee Strickland and Ilene Terry Strickland. He attended school in Oklahoma and later enlisted in the military. 

Fandangle to open Friday

The 83rd anniversary edition of the Fort Griffin Fandangle is scheduled to open to a large audience at the Prairie Theater at 8:30 tomorrow evening.

After a year’s absence due to COVID in 2020, the excitement over the 2021 show has been building since work began on the Sampler, according to Fandangle artistic director Lorna Ayers.

“We chose a very historic theme this year as we were able to perform again,” said Ayers. “The show honors so many of the families, men, women, and legends that are the history of this area.”

Parade to roll Saturday afternoon

The 2021 version of the Fandangle parade is set to take to the streets of downtown Albany at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 19, and parade organizers are hoping for more entries to come in during the next two days. 

Fandangle parade organizers Ragan Riley and Shannon Leech are encouraging local businesses, organizations, and individuals to submit their 2021 entries. 

Winning entries will receive cash prizes to be awarded in several categories.
