11 students to compete at regional UIL

Eleven Albany High students are headed for Grayson College in Denison on Friday for the Region II-2A Academic Meet, with several competing in multiple events.
Qualifiers in the writing events will compete on Friday, with other contests scheduled for Saturday, April 22-23.
“We have several students who will be competing in more than one event,” UIL coordinator Rick Davis said. “Luke Ivy qualified in four events, and Susie Cormack is going in three journalism events.”
Albany students took first place in all five of the district journalism events, as well as all three top places in three of the events – news writing, feature writing, and editorial writing.
Students qualified for the regional contest by earning one of the top three places in their events at the regional meet or by being members of a first place team.
“Our science team and math team both won first at district,” Davis said, “which means all four of the team members and an alternate advance.”
The first place teams along with the top three individuals from each of the eight districts in the region will compete at the meet, with first through third place individuals and top teams advancing to the state meet in Austin on May 6-7.
Albany finished in fourth place overall at the district meet with 278 points.
