Softball season ends at bi-district
The Albany Lady Lions saw a frustrating softball season end Friday,April 26 with a 12-0 loss to Anson in a Class 2A bi-district playoff.
Albany finished 8-5 in a season that began with just nine players on the roster. While the Lady Lions got off to a good start, winning five of their first six, any momentum dissipated as they went more than a month without playingdue to lack of players. They resumed play in early April, getting in the second half of the District 8-2A schedule.
It was, coach Jimmy Fuentes said, “a very unique season.”
“We’ve never been in a situation like this before, not getting to play half the year,” he said. “Then we drew a tough one the first round. But we knew whichever team we played was going to be really,reallytough.”
The bi-district game marked the end of the careers of seniors Robin Lucas and Braylyn Abbate.
“I Appreciate Everything they’ve done,” Fuentes said. “They were the last group to have a little bit of success when they were sophomores, so the yatleast got to enjoy that. I just wish they could have had a better senior year with more help. That’s what they needed, somemore help,somemore experience,to go along with their skills.”
At Anson, the Lady Lions were held to three hits. Lucas was 2 for 2 with singles in the first and fourth. Jayden Kelly singled in the second.
Albany’s best threat came in the third when Solei Henry and Charlee Hefner drew back-to-back walks, but a double play killed the rally.
Albany pitcher Carisa Barrera was charged with six earned runs on 10 hits. She walked three and struck out three.
Ansons cord three runs in both the first and second innings, then sent 11 batters to the plate in a six-run third.
“Give credit to Anson,” Fuentes said. “We didn’t play our best game, but Anson was really good. They’ve got some athletic girls who’ve played a lot together.”
