Hailey Gleitz (l) hands off to Tinley Hefner during a seventh grade girls relay at the district track meet on Monday. The meet was cancelled because of lightning, with some field events left unfinished.

Weather struck once again at a track meet involving Albany teams with the junior high district meet cut short Monday, April 8 at Hamlin.

At least one event was left unfinished in each division. That cost Albany a shot at the seventh grade boys team title as the Cubs had 116 points, but were in reach of leader Cisco with 139 ½.

“Team-wise, we knew it was going to be tough, but we were right there,” boys coach Ryder Peacock said. “We had a lot of individual performances and brought homesomegold, silver, and bronze medals.”

The eighth grade Cubs finished fifth with 57 points.

“We were sitting first and third in the pole vault when they cancelled, so we didn’t get any points there,” Peacock said. “We also had good chances in the shot put and discus. We lost a lot of points with both grades.”

In the girls division, the seventh grade Lady Cubs weresecondwith94points, while the eighth grade Lady Cubs were sixth with 27 points.

“Some of the girls didn’t get to finish in their field events, so we may try to do something here to give them closure,” girls coach Lauren Peacock said. “Some of them didn’t get to throw, and that was the only thing they did. They were upset we didn’t get to finish the meet.”

For the eighth grade boys, Clay Chapman won thehighjumpandmedaled in three events. Jakobi Roberson was second in two events, and Bennett Neece was second in the shot put. Aiden Vickers anchoredthe800relayand was fifth in the high jump.

“We competed really well in the running events,” Ryder Peacock said. “In the field events, we had a great chance in the eighth grade triple jump with Jakobi.”

For the eighth grade girls, Finlee Brown won the 100 hurdles and scored points in two other events.

“Finlee just picked up the hurdles this year and has done really well,” Lauren Peacock said.

Zoey George was fourth in the discus, and Maddie Stapp was sixth in the 200. The 400 relay of Stapp, Brown, Tara Cauble, and Sumer McBay was fourth.

“We put together a sprint relay and it was good for them to compete and get that taste,” Lauren Peacock said.

The seventh grade boys picked up wins from Lyle Wheeler in the high jump and Bentley Boyett in the 300 hurdles. Wheeler was second in three other events, with Boyett second in the 110 hurdles and Blake Britting second in the high jump. The trio joined Trevor Bellah to finish second in the 1600 relay.

“Our seventh grade boys’ mile relay continued to do a really good job,” Ryder Peacock said.

For the seventh grade girls, Tinley Hefner won the pole vault and anchored the winning 1600 relay with Hattie Fikes, Keeley Britting, and Hailey Gleitz. Sawyer Shoaf, Kenzee Roysdon, Kynlee Milligan, Fikes, and Britting also medaled in individual events. Albany was second in the 800 relay and fourth in the 400 relay.

“The seventh grade has about nine girls we’ve been shuffling around in events and relays,” Lauren Peacock said. “They work well together. They ended up improving from the beginning until now like a minute and 30 seconds on the mile relay.”
