Albany golfers continue to prepare for district

Albany Lions and Lady Lions golfers had a busy week as they prepare for district competition with appearances in two tournament over three days.

Albany has one tournament remaining before district. On Monday,March 25, Myleigh Leveridge will play in the girls division of the Haskell tournament, followed by the boys on Wednesday, March 27.

The District 10-2Atournament will be played Monday-Tuesday,April1-2 at Shady Oaks Golf Course.

Coach Tate Thompson said the schedule helps prepare as many players as possible for district and beyond.

“That’s a big deal, especially for the guys,” he said. “Our main group played a good course in tough conditions to prepare them for post-district. The younger guys need the experience of playing in tournaments.”

Leveridge started off this week Monday, March 18 by shooting 123 at the Hamlin tournament. The round was a four-stroke improvement over her first outing of the spring.

On Tuesday, March 19, the boys first team finished fifth out of 16 teams at the Glen Rose tournament played at Squaw Valley Golf Course.

“All the other teams were either 3A, 4A or 5A,” Thompson said.

On Wednesday, March 20, the second boys team played at the Hamlin tournament. Results will be reported next week. Jacob Knight, Connor Smith, Landon Balliew,and Dylan Paxton made up that squad At Glen Rose, Albany shot 327 as a team, an improvement of 25 strokes over its previous outing.

“It was a really tough course with really good competition,” Thompson said. “We had some ups and downs, but for the most part we put together a good team score for the strength of the course and the competition we faced.”

Luke Marshall shot 78 to lead the Lions and finish 11th individually. Houston Heatly shot 80 to place 18th. Lute Wheeler finished 25th with an 83, AydenBalliewshot86,and Huffman Heatly shot 95.

Ty Richards played as a medal entry, shooting 82 to finish 22nd.

Albany finished behind Brownwood, Plano Coram Deo, Argyle, and Stephenville. Among the teams behind the Lions were Prosper Prest on wood North, Glen Rose, and Graham.
