Student volunteers earn awards

Five Albany High School seniors were awarded scholarships from Closet Angels last weekend in a brief announcement ceremony Sunday after church at the ministry’s building.

Chosen as recipients because of their service over the past few years were Shelby Honea, Emily Martin, Trinity McBee, Ashley Sanchez, and Austin Sanchez.

“Three Of These Students grew up volunteering with their parents, and two of the mare in Mrs.Marshall’s class and have been coming daily during the school year,” Closet Angels coordinator Lori Reames said.

Ashley and Austin have grown up helping their mother, Blanca Sanchez, at The Local Exchange (formerly Neighbors in Need) and at Chelsey’s Project, a diaper ministry that Blanca established. They have also volunteered at Closet Angels.

“Trinity helps her mom, Tammy McBee, with Sweet Repeats, our promministry located at First Christian Church,” Reames said. “She has also been a volunteer at Closet Angels and The Local Exchange over the years.”

Each student will receive a check for $500 during the Albany graduation ceremony on May 24.

“We’re going to miss these students as they leave to do other things, and we hope to attract more like-minded volunteers starting June to help through the summer as well as during the school year,” Reames said.
