A dozen Albany High students are advancing to the Region II Academic Meet on Friday and Saturday at Grayson College in Denison.

Students qualified in 11 contests by placing in the top three places individually or as part of first place teams at the district UIL meet last month atAnson.

“I’m very optimistic about our kids going to regional this week,” said Rick Davis, UIL coordinator for high school. “I think we will have a good group advancing to state.”

Journalism students won the journalism team title at district and are advancing in five contests, which is every contest offered.

Senior Robyn Trail is moving on to regional in all five journalism events, while senior Sidney Russell will compete in four of the five. Junior Avery Everitt will compete in two journalism contests.

The journalism events, which includes News Writing, Feature Writing, Editorial Writing, Headline Writing, and Copy Editing, are set for Friday.

Also competing Friday is Holden Sanchez in Ready Writing.

The Computer Science team of Sanchez, Adrian Wren, Kolt Koemel, and Chase McDaniel that took first at district will compete in the written exam and programming portion of the event on Friday.

This is just the second yearforAlbanytocompete in Computer Science in several years. The event is sponsored by Albany ISD technology director Matthew Howard.

The rest of the local students will compete on Saturday, including the Social Studies team that was the champion at district with John Birkla, Jayce Tinkle, and Landon Kreitlercompeting.Birkla will also compete in Current Issues and Events.

The Science Team of Jonathan Coody, Birkla, Landon Picquet, and Kreitler is advancing as the first place team as well.

The top three placing individuals and the top teams at the regional meet will advance to the State UILAcademic Meet on May 15-17 on the UT campus in Austin.
