The varsity football players, cheerleaders, and Bonnie the Bulldog were on hand to greet students arriving at the Moran Independent School District campus to begin the new school year on Monday, Aug. 26.

“The first day of school was great,” said superintendent Danny Freeman. “Enrollment is 113 students in pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, which is an increase of about 10 students from the end of last year.”

Compared to the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year, Monday’s registration numbers were also up, but only by three students.

Administrative assistant Jeannie TenCate broke the enrollment figures down by individual grades.

Moran has seven children in pre-K and nine in kindergarten this year, only one less than at the start of the 2017 year, and over twice as many as last year’s two pre-K and five kindergarten students.

There are six first graders, eight in second, eight in third, seven in fourth, four in fifth, and six in sixth grade, for a total of 39 children in grades first through sixth. There were 47 enrolled in those same grades last year.

Middle school has eight and 13 students in seventh and eighth grades respectively for a total of 21 in junior high, an increase of five compared to last year’s 16.

There are five freshmen, 14 sophomores, 10 juniors, and eight seniors. The total of 37 students in the high school is three less than one year ago, and five less than in 2017.

The 2019-2020 school year started at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, and qualified students will be able to enjoy their first optional fifth day tomorrow, Aug. 30.

Classes at MISD begin at 8:00 a.m. and usually release at 4:00 p.m. daily, except on required/optional fifth days, when classes dismiss at 12:00 noon.

MISD is off for Labor Day on Monday, Sept. 2, with classes resuming at the normal time on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
